Bitterness Will Eat You Up

I have a confession.

I have been struggling with bitterness and have been struggling with it for quite some time now. I’m not going to hash out any details but am asking for prayers that God will work in my heart in order to let go of the extreme bitterness I have towards a certain person.

Uncontrolled temper is soon dissipated on others. Resentment, bitterness, and self-pity build up inside our hearts and eat away at our spiritual lives like a slowly spreading cancer.

– Jerry Bridges

15 See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.

Hebrews 12:15

Bitterness only makes trouble for the person who harbors resentment, not the person being resented. They are going about their lives most likely unaware of the bitterness you are harboring.

Ephesians 4:31-32 (ESV) tells us to “let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.  Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

In Colossians 3:13 we are told to  “make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.

15 But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Matthew 6:15 (NLT)

It’s hard to forgive someone who hurt you deeply but allowing that bitterness and resentment to build up will only tear you down in the end.
